Did you know that the average age for an earliest memory is three years old? At DMC our youngest students in Early Education are this tender age. This means they are creating lifelong memories with us. One of my earliest memories is playing outside. I remember my dad pushing me on swings. His arms would give me such a strong push it felt like I was flying!

This summer, I read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Kimmerer. In it she states “play is the way we get limbered up for the work of the world.” I believe children need play in order to do their best work in the classroom. At DMC, we wholeheartedly include time for play both indoors and outside.

I’m excited to share with you the next project in the Impact Tomorrow Today campaign.  We will be enhancing the safety and security for our students through an entrance renovation and updating our outdoor play spaces.

In preparation, I’ve surveyed the elementary students to see what they believe makes a playground fun. I loved their creative responses, and many of their ideas can be implemented into the current space. Additionally, the safety of our students is something we think about every day. A renovation of our elementary entrance will increase safety and security by changing how visitors enter the building during the school day.

What makes a playground fun?

Our elementary students have some BIG ideas!
