DMC Boys’ Basketball: Are You on Board?

     For the DMC boys’ basketball team, 2006-07 presented a series of exciting events:

 three glorious victories over perennial arch-rival Guthrie Center, two West Central First Team All-Conference nods for junior Travis Vander Linden and freshman Branden Stubbs, and finally, conference and district championship banners to add to the school’s growing collection. But toward the end of the regular season, it became clear that the boys – led by second-year head coach David Stubbs – weren’t quite ready to finish, and in late February DMC earned a fifth trip to state after a landslide victory to Murray.

          The boys’ trip to the brand-new Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines was easily the highlight of the season for both players and fans alike. DMC supporters turned out in droves to the Well, sporting over seven hundred white t-shirts that had been designed especially for the occasion. But what must have been the most truly moving experience for the boys came earlier that morning during a secondary pep rally. Principal John Steddom, Superintendent Bob Stouffer, and dozens of students had surrounded the team and prayed over them, not only for their success on the court that day, but for the boys’ actions to represent Christ.

          While the boys’ 46-37 loss to Lone Tree may have represented the official end to what had been one of the most successful seasons in DMC boys’ basketball history, it didn’t take long for the team to get back in the gym to prepare for next season. Whatever the 2007-08 season may bring – with several returning starters and a solid bench, the boys could quite possibly earn a repeat trip to the Tournament – they are continuing to work hard to accomplish their goals.

       After all, the train isn’t stopping yet.
