Summary of Major Actions Taken During the DMCS Board Meeting on April 3, 2006

Board President Todd Goeldner called the meeting to order.

 

Devotions, led by Director Cheryl Stenzel, centered on the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13).  Mrs. Stenzel prayed each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer and others prayed prayers aloud for each phrase. 

 

The Board adjourned to Closed Session.

 

Ten (10) of the Directors were present, representing a quorum.  An eleventh Director arrived later in Closed Session.  Other members of the administrative leadership team were present during Closed Session, including Dr. Bob Stouffer, Superintendent.

 

The Board approved minutes for the Closed Session meetings on March 13, 2006 and March 30, 2006.

 

The Board approved a 2006-2007 Pastor Grant for Pastor Rob Randazzo.

 

With regret, the Board accepted the resignation of Rosemary Larkin, School Nurse.

 

With regret, the Board accepted the resignation of Wayne Remy, Sixth Grade Instructor.

 

The Board approved Megan Cowell as instructor for the Summer 2006 Spanish Camp.

 

With regret, the Board accepted the resignations of Early Education employees Deb Dewein and Danielle Dziedzic.

 

The Board approved the hiring of new Early Education employees Carol Sheely, Jill Seifert, and Jodi Neal.

 

The Board approved the Summer 2006 ACT/SAT Camp and Instructor Lynn McCool.

 

The Board adjourned to Open Session.

 

Eleven (11) of the Directors were present, representing a quorum.  Several members of the administrative leadership team and members of the Association were also present.

 

The Board approved minutes for the Open Session meeting on March 13, 2006.

 

During the Communication from the Association portion of the agenda, Association Members Donna Bailey and Dr. Marshall Greiman presented their views about the proposed changes to Jazz Band and Victory. 

 

Early Education was a department of emphasis for April, so Early Education Co-Directors Sheryl VanWeelden and Priscilla Reynolds were available to interact with the Board.

 

Elementary was a department of emphasis for April, so Elementary Principal Cade Lambert was available to interact with the Board.

 

Food Service Co-Director Cindy Darnielle was present to interact with the Board about the Food Service program at Des Moines Christian.

 

After discussion, the Board voted to continue with the current practice of awarding grades and credit for Jazz Band and Victory.  In addition, the Board approved that families with part-time students in these programs would not be charged tuition for both Band and Jazz Band or Choir and Victory.

 

After discussion, the Board approved the Street Smarts driver education pilot for the Summer of 2006 at Des Moines Christian School.  John Jones, a DMC faculty member, will serve as the classroom instructor.  Street Smarts does not guarantee that the behind-the-wheel instructors will be Christians. 

 

Board Nominating Chair Ken Hockmuth reported that 3 Association members have already committed to run for the Board, and he is awaiting the response of 2 other Association members.  A “meet-the-candidate” forum is scheduled for Thursday, April 20, 2006 (at a time to be announced).  The Board election will occur during the annual spring Association meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2006 in the DMC Gymnasium.

 

Due to time constraints, all reviews of Board policies were tabled until the Board meeting on April 17, 2006.  Also tabled were the discussion of Dave Bates’ training in January, a discussion about long-range and short-term lease agreements to faith-based and non-faith-based organizations, and discussion about a proposed third student dance at DMC.

 

Director Doug Cappel closed the meeting in prayer.
