Creative Writing
Philosophy Statement: God is the Supreme
Communicator and has spoken to His people in many ways. In His goodness, He
has given us gifts and abilities to read, write, listen, and speak. These
language arts skills are the foundation and gateway to all learning.
Understanding and developing these gifts is essential in language arts
instruction. Through the study of language arts students will develop written
and oral skills that are necessary in becoming life-long learners of God and
His word, which in turn will enable them to be salt and light to the world.
Course Objective:
This
course gives students the chance to create other forms of written work, which
are creative and not expository in nature. Students examine a selection from
each of the major areas of study and then seek to pattern their work after the
“masters.” Areas of study include the short story, playwriting & dramatic
production, poetry, and the novelette.

Materials:
Time Allotment: 44 minutes per day, 5 days
per week, one semester

- Review of writing basics
- Vocabulary study of Latin & Greek roots, prefixes and
suffixes
- Basics of Descriptive Writing
- Basics of Narrative writing
- Creating the children’s story
- A Tale of Two Cities book study and research
project—Creating historical fiction
- Much Ado About Nothing—Modernizing Shakespearean Drama
- Writing various forms of poetry
