Art

 

Philosophy Statement:  God, The Master Artist, is the author of all creation.  The universe He created is full of colors, textures, patterns, shapes, and form to explore.  God has gifted individuals with creative expressions and abilities.  Through the use of meaningful artistic expressions and experiences, students are given opportunities to utilize their abilities to glorify God.  The visual arts can have a powerful impact upon it viewing audience.  Realization of such power is an exciting responsibility for students to demonstrate their Christian testimony to the community and society through the use of creative expression.   

 

Course Objective:  The students will be introduced to and participate with various art medias.  They will utilize the techniques and knowledge learned to complete art projects.

Philosophy Statement:  The purpose of Christian education is to equip the Christian young person with the necessary skills to succeed in life.  As such, it is necessary to provide the student with a realistic, bibliocentric view of the world around him.  Our desire is to develop in the student the mind of Christ.  To this end, biblical truth and the teaching of a biblical worldview will be integrated in all academic disciplines, from preschool to high school.

 

Course Objective:  The students will survey the Old Testament and conduct an in-depth study of the prophet Samuel and the Kings of both Israel and Judah.  They will study the decline and fall of Israel and Judah.  The course is designed for the students to identify patterns of obedience and disobedience toward God by His people.  They will also be able to see the consequences of sin throughout history.

Language and Spelling

 

Philosophy Statement:  God is the Supreme Communicator and has spoken to His people in many ways.  In His goodness, He has given us gifts and abilities to read, write, listen, and speak.  These language arts skills are the foundation and gateway to all learning.  Understanding and developing these gifts is essential in language arts instruction.  Through the study of language arts students will develop written and oral skills that are necessary in becoming life-long learners of God and His word, which in turn will enable them to be salt and light to the world.

 

Course Objective:  The students will clearly and correctly express themselves in all forms of writing, reports, and letter writing.  They will understand and correctly use capitalization and punctuation and will learn all parts of speech.   They will also learn weekly spelling lists.

Library/ Media Center

 

Philosophy Statement:  Learning to use and appreciate the library is a life-long skill.  It cuts across all curricular areas school-wide.  “A library is a gathering of ideas, of information—put in order and shared.” (Compton’s Encyclopedia, 1993.)  Every student using the library learns more about God’s truth and applying this truth to daily life.  The library is a place where students can find needed information and good literature to feed their growing and developing minds.

 

Course Objective:  Students will be introduced to materials suitable for their reading level, review proper library behavior, library procedures, and book care.  They will also be introduced to various genres and the famous authors in various genres.  Students will become familiar with the card catalog and the location of various call numbers in the library.

Philosophy Statement:   God is a God of order, and through the study of mathematics, students will appreciate the orderliness, exactness, and completeness that God has infused throughout his creation.  Through the study of mathematics, students can develop a better appreciation of the infinite wisdom of God when compared to the finiteness of man.

 

Course Objective:  The students will receive instruction in and demonstrate the ability to perform basic mathematical functions and problem-solving in the areas of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and geometry.

Philosophy Statement:  Physical Education is that area which centers on man and his physical development.  After an individual accepts Jesus Christ as his personal

Savior, the individual should maintain and develop his body to the glory of God.  Physical Education focuses on increasing student’s knowledge and affecting student’s attitudes and behaviors relative to physical activities.  Through the study of many physical activities, students will be encouraged to incorporate some form of physical activity into their lifestyle.

 

Course Objective:  Students will be encouraged to demonstrate maximum participation in physical activity.  Students will be prepared for activities they can use for their own lifetime of physical fitness.

Social Studies

 

Philosophy Statement:  From creation to the present day, God has been involved in the governing of man.  By studying the past, we see how God works His will in the lives of those who follow Him and how He has spoken and intervened in history.  The study of history should yield an appreciation and realization of the things God has accomplished through people and nations since the creation of the world and His love and concern as He controls the events of world history.

 

Course ObjectiveStudents will explore the history of the United States from the time of the early explorers to the Civil War.  A special unit of study focuses on the history of the state of Iowa from its early beginnings to today.  Also included in this study are map skills.
