High School Concert Band
Philosophy Statement: God created the world with innumerous sounds. Since the beginning God has given music to mankind to enrich our lives and to enhance man’s expression of love to his Creator. The Bible gives several instances when men and women glorify and praise God through singing and the use of instruments. Through the study and performance of music, students can focus their gifts and talents into expression that reflect His beauty. Music is a gift from God.
Course Objective: Students will prepare and learn glide step techniques and apply it through block marching in fall parades. For the Christmas concert, the band will perform various musical selections. Students will perform at State Solo Ensemble contest in late March. They will also perform at Large Group contest and the Parade of Bands concert using various pieces of music, including one piece from the state required list. Throughout the year the students will be graded on their music theory skills. These thirty theory lessons are to take the students’ music education abilities beyond playing notes and rhythms.

Time Allotment: 44 minutes per day, five days per week
The band will spend around one month outside to prepare for the fall parades. Preparing for the secondary Christmas concert takes around two months. Students prepare for solo ensemble contest in a little more than a month. When starting to prepare for solo ensemble contest, the band sight-reads every other day. This gives the band a good idea what they might want to play for Large Group contest which usually takes a solid month to prepare for. All theory lessons are turned in and checked every other Friday.
