Anticipated .5 K-6 Guidance Counselor Opening

The DMCS Elementary Guidance and Counseling program requires the cooperative effort of students, counselor, teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents.  A certified elementary counselor services students.  This comprehensive program is designed to serve all students in grades kindergarten through sixth grade via a preventive, developmental, and sequential array of activities that are presented to an entire class, small groups or individually.

Classroom guidance consists of special activities developed by the counselor as a preventive approach to problems.  The counselor has contact with every elementary student at some time during the school year through classroom lessons.

Small groups involve counselor-directed activities designed to meet specific concerns of students and are conducted with four to six students over the course of four to six weeks, typically thirty minutes per week.  Small groups are either preventive, developmental, or remedial in nature. Preventive groups focus on teaching skills that will prepare students to cope with social, emotional, or academic issues they may encounter in the future including but not limited to social skills, decision making, and dealing with change.  Developmental groups focus on various skills needed at each age-appropriate level including but not limited to cooperation skills, peer pressure, and making and keeping friends.  Remedial groups focus on behavioral changes, learning new skills, and the rehearsal of skills including but not limited to conflict resolution, developing responsibility, family changes, and loss.  Student participation in a small group may be one of support, role model, leadership, or specific skill deficit.  These groups are formed with input from or recommendation of parents, teachers, and administrators.  Parents are always informed when students have an opportunity to participate in a small group.

Individual guidance is offered for students who may be experiencing a situation that is best handled on a one-on-one basis.  This may include social, emotional, and spiritual concerns.  The counselor informs parents regarding individual counseling when appropriate and when working with students in an on-going manner.  Referrals may be teacher, parent or student initiated.

All applicants must be born-again believers who demonstrate a mature and vibrant faith. DMC provides a high quality academic experience for our students within a Christian environment, thus blending the best of both. We expect all instruction to be from a Christian worldview. All candidates need to possess the following six qualities:

1.      Hard worker:  Education is a demanding profession involving long hours. A DMC teacher is expected to put forth their best effort each day.

2.      Be Creative: Elementary students need a measure of creativity in their instructional processes. We expect DMC teachers to use a variety of methods in their instruction.

3.      Love kids:  Working with elementary students can be challenging at times.  You must love working with this age group.

4.      Be teachable:  We learn new things everyday. DMC is a school that values ongoing learning for the staff as much as its students. Our teachers must be open to learning new strategies and processes in order to continue to grow and improve.

5.      Capacity for change: Education is not a 9 to 5 job. There are new challenges each day that require adaptability and flexibility to overcome. DMC teachers must be ready to meet those challenges willingly and with joy.
