Craig Carlson, Co-Head Varsity Coach
Craig Carlson has been part of the DMC Football program since 2003. He previously coached the 7th and 8th grade teams, seeing the 8th grade finish with a 5-0 record. Coach Carlson joined the Varsity staff in 2009 as offensive and defensive line coach. Craig played high school football at Cedar Rapids Prairie where he was part of 2 undefeated teams. In 1981 he was part of the Class 3A State Football Championship team finishing that year with a 12-0 record. He attended Northwestern College in Orange City, IA where a knee injury ended his football playing career prior to the start of his freshman year. He went on to earn his BA in Sociology and Criminal Justice. For the past 22 years Coach Carlson has worked as a Juvenile Probation Officer with Polk and Jasper County Juvenile Court Services. He and his wife, Melanie, live in Grimes with their 2 boys, Cody and Zach. His boys are students at DMC and also members of the football team.
Jeff South, Co-Head Varsity Coach
Coach South has been involved with sports since his high school years. He also wrestled in college and coached middle school football and wrestling while attending Inland Empire Bible College (now Moody Northwest) in Spokane, Washington. Jeff has been the Pastor of Student Ministries at Johnston Evangelical Free Church since 2004. He has coached high school football for a total of 9 years in Colorado, Johnston, IA and here at Des Moines Christian. He also has coached high school wrestling for 18 years including the last three years at Urbandale High School. Jeff and his wife of 25 years, Karla, have 4 boys and 1 daughter-in-law. Their youngest son, Jeb, is a current student at DMC.
