Rhythmic speech, movement, singing, games, instruments, reading, listening, composition, improvisation and performance are all a part of the student’s elementary music experience at Des Moines Christian School. As I enter my twelfth year of teaching at DMCS, I continue to be excited and blessed with the joy and privilege of working with pre-school through sixth grade children in a Christian setting. Every school day is an adventure filled with inquisitiveness, enthusiasm and creativity!
Professionally, I earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Drake University. I am currently licensed by both the State of Iowa (K-12 music) and the Association of Christian Schools International. I am an active member of Kodaly Educators of Iowa and OAKE and hold certification in Orff Levels I & II and Kodaly I. My undergraduate music studies included pipe organ, piano and voice. Although my main teaching experience is at the elementary level, I have also taught middle school vocal & general music. My husband, Dave, and I serve on the Worship Team at Westchester Evangelical Free Church in Des Moines.
Growing up, I faithfully attended church and Sunday school, participated in church youth group, sang in the choirs and became assistant church organist at age 13. Although I had always considered myself a Christian, it was not until I heard the salvation message (in my mid-twenties) that I realized what I had been missing and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I praise God for His unconditional love, sovereignty and faithfulness in my life. He truly knows the innermost desires of our heart. Music has always been a very predominant part of my life, so I consider it a huge blessing and privilege to be able to serve and glorify Him through the gift of music!
