What does DMC’s mission look like through the eyes of a student? Jake Newton shares how he experiences DMC's mission and values in his everyday life at school.
Des Moines Christian Schools’ mission is to equip minds and nurture hearts to impact the world for Christ. DMC’s values are Community in Christ, Growing with Christ, and Loving like Christ.
Equip: How has DMC helped you grow as a student and prepare for what's next?
DMC has helped me understand what it actually means to have a real relationship with God, and it's pushed me to get out of my comfort zone. It's also shown me how much people can help you when you're going through a tough time. For college, I feel way more prepared because of all the resources they have, like the classes, the teachers, and even quiet spaces where I can focus and get work done.
What have you learned at DMC that has helped you grow or challenged you?
The academics are definitely pushed harder, and I've had to step up. Transferring from a public school was a challenge too. Coming into a whole new environment with new people in high school wasn't easy at first, but it's made me grow a lot.
Nurture: How has DMC helped you grow in your faith and in your relationships with others?
DMC has shown me that people here are different. They know how to have a relationship with Christ, and they actually understand when someone is going through something. My faith has grown because I've learned that God really does have a plan for me. At first I didn't want to leave public school at all, and now it's honestly the best decision I've ever made.
Impact & Values: How has DMC helped you use your gifts to serve others, and how do you see Community in Christ, Growing with Christ, and Loving Like Christ at DMC?
DMC has helped me use my leadership and serving skills a lot more, because the people here always keep me in check and keep up with me, whether it's teachers or other students. I see Christ all around me in that, because everyone is so loving, kind, and understanding.
What are you excited about for your senior year on the new campus?
I'm excited to hang out with my friends in a bigger space, but what I'm most excited about is the new practice facility and field for the football guys!
