DMC Middle School Student Recognized by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth

Middle School student Bowen Flynn of Norwalk, Iowa, has been recognized by the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) for exceptional academic achievement. He is in the seventh grade at Des Moines Christian Schools (DMCS) in Urbandale. 

Students honored achieved outstanding performance on the SAT, ACT, School and College Ability Test, or similar assessment taken as part of the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search. Bowen took the School and College Ability Test. CTY uses above-grade-level testing to identify advanced students from around the world and provide a clear picture of their academic abilities. Each year, about 16,000 students from more than 75 countries join CTY. On average, less than 30 percent of students who join CTY qualify for either high or grand honors based on their test scores, which Bowen, age twelve, received.

"This is not just recognition of students’ performance on one test, but a testament to their curiosity and capacity for learning,” said Amy Lynne Shelton, PhD, CTY’s executive director.

Bowen has also earned access to CTY’s rigorous, hands-on, day, residential, and online courses, which are offered in a range of subjects including History and Social Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, Robotics and Technology, and Science and Engineering.

Bowen’s mother Tory Flynn said, “Bowen loves to be challenged, and we have always fostered his curiosity with opportunities to learn more deeply about the subjects that interest him. We’re proud of Bowen and grateful for his school, DMCS, that provides advanced classes and accelerated curriculum providing him additional growth opportunities.”

Bowen started DMC in first grade. He plays on the DMC Middle School football team and enjoys golfing and writing.
