Learning Through Exploring At Des Moines Christian

Middle schoolers at DMC follow our research-backed schedule supporting a paced approach to learning. We utilize a block schedule to ensure depth of understanding, providing ample time for students to learn through exploring and hands-on practice. Students take exploratory classes based on a variety of topics to nurture their strengths and talents and spark new interests. Ultimately, our Christian middle school programming allows students to practice, discover, and discuss who God has created them to be.

From day one at Des Moines Christian Middle School, students gain a community within a community through our House program. Each student is sorted into one of our five houses, meeting with fellow House-mates several times throughout the week to help build community outside of the classroom.

How Students Earn Points For Their House

Here, students gain leadership opportunities and foster teamwork through intentional competition. Tug-of-war and dress-up days are some of our students’ favorite traditions, but students are also celebrated for their everyday contributions to the classroom. Our Houses use a point system focused on the following three areas:

Noticeable Action - Serving peers, acts of kindness, going above and beyond to make a difference through behaviors, positive distinguishing actions in the classroom.
Exemplary Leadership - Demonstrating a high level of academic achievement on major assessments or engaging in rare acts of service that exceed expectations.
Reading Challenge - Points awarded for every 10,000 pages read by the House.

Making The Middle School Transition At Des Moines Christian Schools

As students learn how to navigate this new environment with more independence and responsibility, our teachers and support staff are there for the inevitable ups and downs of middle school. We make the middle school transition as seamless as possible through our House program, grouping students going through the same experience together for common ground and community. Students start school here with the understanding that they’re part of a unique culture of acceptance and understanding.

We know a Christian education is an investment in your child’s faith and future and are committed to supporting families through tuition assistance opportunities that expand access to Christian schooling. The State of Iowa Department of Education provides tuition support through Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), which families must apply for through the Department of Education each year.
