DMC Teacher Receives National Award for Christian Education

High School Math Teacher Ms. Annie Pettit, has been named a Christian Teacher of the Year by the Herzog Foundation. To begin the school year, the Herzog Foundation is recognizing 12 teachers that embody excellence in Christian education. The brand-new awards program is part of the Herzog Foundation’s mission to advance Christian education on a nationwide scale.

“Teachers are integral to the success of every school and every student,” said Herzog Foundation Chairman Todd Graves. “ Our Christian Teacher of the Year awards seek to identify these exceptional teachers and inspire others to join the profession.”

As one of the 12 teachers to make it through the final selection process, Ms. Pettit will receive a monetary award and travel to Washington, D.C. for the Herzog Foundation’s Teacher of the Year Awards Gala on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

“I teach in Christian education because of its focus on educating the entire student. Mark 12:30 talks about the greatest commandment of loving the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength,” Ms. Pettit said. “This takes our entire being so education has to be about more than just the mind. It must include the heart and soul. As a teacher, it is important that I help students grow academically in my content area and Biblical understanding, but it does not stop there. In a Christian school, I can help students understand their identity is found in Christ. The students and I can talk about life struggles and achievements (and everything else in between) through the lens of God’s Word. Their hearts and souls matter.”
